Washingtonville High School Names Valedictorian and Salutatorian
2019 Valedictorian and Salutatorian
Superintendent Roy Reese and Washingtonville High School (WHS) Principal Brian Connolly are proud to announce that Kyle Thompson has been named the 2019 valedictorian and Mary Gannon is this year’s salutatorian.
Kyle, the son of George and Michele of Washingtonville, earned top honors with a GPA of 102.928. During his time at WHS, he maintained an active course schedule, taking every Advanced Placement (AP) and college course the school had to offer. He excelled in his math and science classes throughout his high school career.
While Kyle is planning on majoring in engineering, he is undecided about which college he will be attending this fall. His top contenders are Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Cornell University.
Kyle is the President of National Honor Society and a member of Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society, and Foreign Language Honor Society. Kyle has been a part of the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) since his freshman year and is now the Battalion Commander. He participates in Recycling Club and is the liaison for the Community Service Club. Kyle also has competed on the school’s Lacrosse and Cross Country teams throughout High School.
Kyle, who works as a lifeguard at a local condominium, is also employed by Mike’s Inflatables. Last summer, he was chosen to attend American Legion Boys State, one of the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students. Kyle is also a finalist for the National Merit Commended Scholarship Award and received a scholarship from the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC).
Salutatorian Mary, daughter Francis and Barbara Gannon of Monroe, has a GPA of 101.714. While attending WHS, she took AP Biology, AP US History, AP Calculus BC, College Italian, and College Chemistry, and shined in all of her math and science classes.
Mary is a member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, and Science Honor Society. She has been a Girl Scout since Kindergarten and regularly volunteers for Habitat for Humanity. Mary has competed on the school’s Lacrosse and Tennis teams since freshman year, earning the captain’s title her junior year of Tennis and sophomore year of Lacrosse.
Outside of WHS, Mary works at Weir’s Ice Cream in Washingtonville, coaches youth lacrosse, and tutors math and chemistry students. In addition, she has been a Quality Data Intern for Boston Children’s Health Physicians since her sophomore year, where she has gained exposure to the business side of medicine.
This fall, Mary, who plans to study biomedical engineering, is choosing between SUNY University at Buffalo and Clemson University in South Carolina.
Principal Connolly is honored to have had Kyle and Mary as students. “These two have a bright future ahead of them,” he states. “They have made us proud during their time at WHS, and we are excited to see what lies ahead for them.”
