Best Communities for Music Education award

Congratulations to the Washingtonville Music Department for being honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education for the 6th consecutive year.

The Best Communities Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

Districts that have been recognized by the NAMM Foundation are often held up as models for other educators looking to boost their own music education programs.

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Washingtonville answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

This award recognizes that Washingtonville is leading the way with learning opportunities as outlined in the new federal education legislation, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The legislation, signed into law in December 2015, replaces No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), which was often criticized for an overemphasis on testing—while leaving behind subjects such as music. ESSA recommends music and the arts as important elements of well-rounded education for all children.


Music Booster Club

The Washingtonville School District Music Booster Club's goal is to ensure that our students will get the best possible music education experience that the WCSD can offer and to offer support to all musical programs in Washingtonville Schools. All music parents are encouraged to participate in this organization.

  • 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement.
  • 3 times more likely to be elected to class office within their schools.
  • 4 times more likely to participate in math and science fairs.
  • 3 times more likely to win an award for school attendance.
  • 4 times more likely to win an award for writing an essay or poem.

Young artists, as compared with their peers, are likely to:

  • Attend music, art, and dance classes nearly three times as frequently.
  • Participate in youth groups nearly four times as frequently.
  • Read for pleasure nearly twice as often.
  • Perform community service more than four times as often.

Music Offerings

Elementary School
  • Classroom music - Kindergarten through Grade 5 once per week
  • Instrumental lessons - Grade 5 once per week
  • Band - Grade 5 every other day.
  • Chorus - Grade 4 & 5 every other day.
Middle School
  • Instrumental lessons - all grades once per week
  • Band -  all grades every other day
  • Chorus - all grades  / Grades 7 & 8 select chorus
  • Classroom music - Grade 6 & 7 
High School
    • Instrumental lessons - all grades once per week
    • Band - 2 bands - all grades every other day
    • Chorus - Concert Choir / Chamber Choir / Treble Choir
