August 25, 2020
Dear Parents/Guardians of UPK Students:
On Friday, August 21, 2020 the District received notification from the NYS Division of Budget that due to state fiscal restraints, school districts will have 20% of their state aid withheld for the 2020-2021 school year. In addition, any aid without a statutory due date will be completely withheld. This includes our Universal Pre-Kindergarten funds.
The financial impact these proposed cuts will have on our District is unprecedented and could be devastating. Current guidelines mandated by the CDC and the Department of Health limit the number of students we can service. We are concerned that the metrics will continue to change, and possibly lead the district to transition to a full remote learning model which is not developmentally appropriate for our pre-kindergarten students. Therefore, on Monday, August 24, 2020, the Board of Education voted and approved the recommendation to not offer our universal pre-kindergarten program for the 2020-2021 school year.
If available and under current language at the state level, the District intends to apply for funds again in the next fiscal year.
To help families continue to support their students academically, the District will be posting a list of resources on the district website of resources that parents can refer to throughout the school year to utilize at their convenience. We look forward to working with your children next year when they join us for Kindergarten.
