Closings & Delays

The Washingtonville Central School District has established protocols for deciding whether to close or delay school, or cancel activities, due to inclement weather.

When inclement weather is in effect or is expected, the process for making a decision on closing school begins at 4:30 in the morning, or the night before. School officials watch the weather reports, check the radar and make contacts with town and village officials in regard to road and sidewalk conditions.

Closings and delayed openings

The primary reason for canceling or delaying school is the safety of students in getting to and from school, and the safety of our staff. Inclement weather conditions include persistent wind-chill conditions of -25 degrees or below, consistent with guidance from the New York Statewide School Health Services Center.

We will do our very best to make closing decisions by 6 a.m. If we think the weather will improve in the morning, we will have a delay. The district’s emergency notification system will be programmed to start calling as close to 6 a.m. as possible.

Early dismissals, emergency plans and after school activities

While we try to avoid dismissing students early, there will be times when we have no choice. Please have an emergency plan in place for an early dismissal.

As a general rule, when school is closed for the day or there is an early dismissal, all afterschool and athletic activities and evening events are cancelled, unless it is otherwise announced.

In addition, please note that there is no meal service and/or distribution when school is not in session.

Information sources

If there are any changes in school operation hours, the district uses several information channels to alert parents and community members, as outlined below. School is open on its usual schedule unless otherwise announced.

  • WCSD website: https://www.ws.k12.ny.us/ Weather notices are posted right on the homepage.
  • Connect-ed email and text alerts (Parents are automatically connected)
  • District’s Facebook and Twitter pages
  • Local media: WHUD/WPDH

It is best to rely on more than one information source, particularly in situations where the weather may cause power outages.

Up to date contact information

It is important that your contact information be up to date to ensure you receive weather-related alerts. If you have any changes to your email or telephone numbers, please contact your child’s school office right away.
