Questions and Answers

Q : What is the best way to contact Mrs. Scelia?

A: The quickest way to contact me is through Classdojo.com. Login information will be sent home on the first day of school. You may also email me at ascelia@ws.k12.ny.us or you may use the contact form to the left. You may also write me a note or call the school and leave a message and I will call you back as soon as possible.

Q: What is Class Dojo?
A: ClassDojo is a fun tool to track and monitor behavior in the classroom quickly and easily. Each student is assigned their own avatar that they can custom design. Students are rewarded points for positive behaviors and deducted points for negative. ClassDojo also captures and generates data on behavior that is viewable by both teacher and parents. Each student is given a unique code that is sent home at the beginning of the year. Log in, enter your email address, and it will automatically send you behavior reports on a weekly basis. This is a great way to stay informed!

Q: How much homework should we expect?
A: HW should take your child no more than 20 minutes. I give homework because it is useful in reinforcing what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons, teaches responsibility, and helps students develop positive study habits. Students should do their best job on their homework. We expect students to do the work on their own and only ask for help after they have given it their best effort.

Q: What happens if my child becomes frustrated and cannot complete an assignment?
A: If your child has difficulty with homework, please write me a note on the actual assignment itself. I will go over the work with your child usually on the day I receive the assignment back. Please do not spend hours on an assignment if your child is becoming frustrated! Homework is not intended to create a “battle” between parent and child.

Q: How often does my child have to read at home?
A: Students should read at least fifteen minutes a night Monday- Friday. The best way to develop a love of reading is by reading with them and encouraging them to read as much as possible!

Q: Can my child bring in a snack and a water bottle?
A: Yes! We will be having a working snack daily. Some great healthy snacks include pretzels, granola bars, carrot sticks, etc. Healthy snacks do not include candy or any sugary food.
