Not everything in life comes easily to Victoria Mirecki, even if she makes it look that way.
“It’s kind of hard sometimes,? she says of maintaining the proper balance between school and athletics, “but I am always motivated to see what I can achieve when I work hard.?
Mirecki loves her math work and enjoys social studies and a bit of science. She has achieved a grade point average of more than 100 and ranks fourth in her senior class at Washingtonville High School. She used to play soccer in the fall and run track in the spring but her focus for the past year has been solely on basketball, where she has achieved all-star status. Mirecki, voted the Varsity845 female athlete of the month for December, has committed to play basketball for NCAA Division III Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
“She’s an excellent athlete,? said Washingtonville basketball coach Jim Steeves, who calls Mirecki a “once in a lifetime” player. “It’s a pleasure as a coach to have your best player be your hardest worker.?
Mirecki decided on WPI because the school has a strong academic program, and she wants to study in something related to the stem field, whether her major is tied to science, math or technology.
Basketball is the sport Mirecki decided to focus upon when she wanted to trim her schedule. She has been a four-year letter winner for the Wizards, and the team captain is averaging 15 points per game.
“She has good vision, she has a great motor and she plays hard every minute that she’s on the floor,? Steeves said.
Mirecki was named to the local team that competed at the Basketball Coaches Association of New York tournament last summer, and was a most enthusiastic supporter of her new teammates, even when she was on the bench, Steeves said. Off the court, Mirecki is a peer tutor, participates in the high school Wind Ensemble and is a member of the math, foreign language and science honor societies, plus the National Honor Society.
“She is the type of kid that brings the rest of the team up to her level of play,? Steeves said. “Day in and day out they try to match her level of play. She’s a great teammate.?
