WHS National Art Honor Society Hosts "Empty Bowls Dessert Social and Fundraiser"

Washingtonville High School Hosts Third Annual Empty Bowls WHS Fundraiser Benefiting Local Food Bank & Pantry

Washingtonville, New York-Friday, April 28, 2018 Washingtonville High School’s National Art Honor Society is looking forward to hosting its Third Annual Empty Bowls WHS Fundraiser benefiting the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley & the Country Kids Food Pantry. This event will take place Saturday, April 28, 2018 from 1-330pm in the High School large and middle cafeterias.

The Empty Bowls Project is the brainchild of the non-profit group, Imagine/RENDER. Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to raise both money and awareness in the fight to end hunger (www.emptybowls.net).

The National Art Honor Society is excited to add some variety to the event this year by hosting a Dessert Social. ?Guests will make a suggested donation ?for a hand-crafted ceramic bowl? or mug and? then partake in an ice cream sundae & dessert buffet with goods donated by Washingtonville community members, restaurants, and businesses. At the end of the event the guests leave with an "empty bowl" and a full stomach, which will serve as a reminder of all those who are struggling with food insecurity.

The first and second annual Empty Bowls WHS Fundraisers were both a huge success. Each year over 300 guests purchased bowls and mugs made by students, parents, staff, faculty, and local artists. In the two years combined we have raised $9,450 for the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley. Fifty percent of the proceeds are earmarked for Washingtonville’s Country Kids Food Pantry as part of the Food Bank’s “Adopt-a-Pantry” Program.

??

National Art Honor Society students organize and work the event, canvass local businesses,  promote the event via social media, and design the official Empty Bowls WHS annual posters.

Lara Held, Washingtonville High School’s Ceramics Teacher, first introduced Empty Bowls as a classroom project in September of 2015. This year over one hundred Clay Class students created food-themed ceramic bowls, many of which have been donated to the fundraiser. The project expanded throughout the school year to include bowl-making and bowl-glazing workshops for the school district staff, faculty, administrators, families and community members. Local ceramic artists and potters have also donated hand crafted bowls and mugs to the fundraiser.

Ms. Held believes, “The Empty Bowls Project teaches students the power of the visual arts to promote positive change. Through creative expression we are raising money for and awareness of an important local issue: hunger and food insecurity. This event brings together the school community with local businesses to provide enough food to feed over 300 people, an amazing achievement when you consider that every ounce of food is generously donated. This project is about art + food + community + activism, an equation that can only = success!”
