WHS JROTC Visit Washington, D.C.

The first day started with lunch at the Fort Myer-Henderson Dining Facility where they got to see firsthand where and how soldiers eat. This was followed by a tour of the Pentagon. Next, they headed to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum. Cadet Command Sergeant Major Sheehan identified that, “the planetarium was my favorite part, but really everything in here is so fascinating.” The following morning started with a guided tour of the U.S. Capitol. The next stop was the White House. Cadet Sergeant Jared Keene said, “the White House was the best part of the DC trip. How many people can say they have seen the inside of the White House…I can.” After departing the White House, they continued the tour along the National Mall, stopping at the Korean and Vietnam War Memorials and ending at the Lincoln Memorial. The cadets really enjoyed walking around the reflecting pool and taking in all of the surrounding history. Later that afternoon the cadets watched the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The last day started with another visit to Arlington National Cemetery where the cadets saw the visitors center, Eternal Flame, Audie Murphy’s gravesite, and many others. After loading the bus, the cadets were shuttled to the Jefferson Memorial and finally the National Archive’s. Around noon the fun ended and they headed back to Washingtonville. All of the cadets had a great time and are already talking about the next trip to DC since there is still so much more to see.
