CHAMBER RECITAL SERIES: STAFF SERGEANT YALIN CHI, PIANO West Point, NY - Staff Sergeant Yalin Chi will present a piano recital on Saturday, October 24th at 7:30 p.m. at Egner Hall (West Point Band Building, 685 Hardee Place, West Point, NY) as part of the West Point Band's Chamber Recital Series. Featuring sonatas of the early 20th century, it promises to be a wonderful performance. This concert is free and open to the public. Staff Sgt. Chi will showcase her talents with a delightful program. Works to be performed include Sergei Rachmaninov's Sonata, no. 2 in B-flat minor, Sonatine by Maurice Ravel, and Alban Berg's Sonata, opus 1. Additionally, three preludes by Skryaban will be featured: Prelude, opus 37 no. 1, Prelude, opus 33 no. 1, and Prelude, opus 33 no. 2. The recital will close with Johann Sebastian Bach's chorale-prelude Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland. Staff Sgt. Yalin Chi joined the West Point Band in January of 2008. Originally from Beijing, China, she gave her debut with the Central Opera Symphony Orchestra in 1997. That same year, she moved to the United States and studied with Victoria Mushkatkol at the Interlochen Arts Academy. Staff Sgt. Chi completed her Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the Juilliard School, under the instruction of Seymour Lipkin and Jerome Lowenthal. She has performed in Alice Tully Hall, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie, Gardner Museum in the United States and Kumho Art Hall in Seoul, Korea. With an orchestral piano fellowship, Staff Sgt. Chi attended the Aspen Music Festival in the summer of 2006. In past summers she attended the Taos School of Music, Music Academy of the West and Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival. Staff Sgt. Chi has also been one of the official pianists at the past two Joseph Alessi Trombone Seminars. Chris Eberle, bassoon Sgt. 1st Class Jennifer Tibbs, clarinet West Point, NY – The West Point Band chamber recital series will continue on Sunday, November 1 at 3:00 p.m. in the Jewish Chapel with bassoonist Master Sgt. Chris Eberle, a native of Kansas City, Missouri, who is the principal bassoonist and frequent soloist with the Concert Band. Sharing the recital spotlight will be clarinetist Sgt. 1st Class Jennifer Tibbs, originally from Henderson, North Carolina. This performance also includes Dr. Ruthanne Schempf, accompanist for the chamber series for over 25 years. She is the daughter of former West Point teacher of music, Colonel William Schempf, commander of the band from 1957-1974. Also featured will be Daniel Parrette, son of concert band principal clarinetist Sgt. 1st Class John Parrette and winner of the 2009 Youth Solo Competition. This performance is free and open to the public. The recital will include Schumann’s Five Pieces in Folk Style for bassoon and piano; Three Arias from The Marriage of Figaro for two clarinets and bassoon by Mozart; Six Studies in English Folk Song for clarinet and piano by Ralph Vaughn Williams; and Beethoven’s Trio for Clarinet, violoncello and piano, Op. 11 for clarinet, bassoon, and piano.
