Welcome to WIZARD MATH!
We have been working very hard to put together a challenging and meaningful curriculum in Mathematics for students in Washingtonville. The curriculum will "spiral" through topics, hitting several mathematical concepts in each of the major units of study. For example, we will be representing and describing and modeling ratio relationships using algebraic terms, tables, coordinate grids, and algorithms. When the curriculum moves to geometry, we will be describing and modeling geometric figures and relationships using algebra, tables, graphs and algorithms. This will insure the skills supporting the major concepts are covered with students over and over again.
In my math class, the emphasis for students is always on developing and applying strategies for solving problems. Students are challenged every day to think about the concepts being taught, and to use this concept knowledge to solve real-world problems. In very few cases will students be taught "the way" to solve a problem.
Of course, this is a math course, and all topics of study require a solid knowledge of basic mathematical facts and operations. We will work a lot on these skills in class this year, and students are expected to practice them independently as well.
