Hello! My name is Mrs. Bishop and I am the speech and language pathologist for Washingtonville Middle and High School.
Speech and language, as a related service, has many different components. The main component is communication. Communication is a vital, functional, life-long skill. In my speech and language classroom, we work on aspects of listening, speaking, reading and writing to improve communication skills across all areas.
Speech includes the way we say sounds (articulation), how we say them (fluency and rate) and how well we are understood (intelligibility). Language may include, memory, vocabulary, grammar, and reading and listening comprehension. Pragmatics is also part of speech and language services. Pragmatics is our social language and how well we can work in a group setting.
All of these skills are important to be able to access the common core curriculum and work well with both peers and adults inside and outside of the school setting.
