Aquatic Physical Education
The major goals of Aquatic Physical Education are to develop the student's water skills, instill knowledge about a safe aquatic environment, gain respect for the water and instill knowledge about a safe aquatic environment. The ultimate goal is personal safety which will be achieved by enhancing the swimmers comfort level in the water.
Middle School Swim in Physical Education
All students meet in the middle school gym and walk to and from the high school with their middle school Physical Education teacher during their gym period. All students need bathing suits and towels. Medicals should be turned in prior to the first class. The high school Aquatic Physical Education teachers and the middle school Physical Education teachers teach the swim class.
6th Grade- Every 6th grader will have swimming for approximately 2 1/2 weeks or 5/6 lessons. The boys will have class in September and October and the girls will have class in May and June. This is an introductory unit to the pool. It was designed to provide the students an opportunity to play various water games that teach safe behavior in and around the pool while developing a positive attitude and respect for the water.
7th/8th Grade- Every 7th and 8th grader will have swimming for approximately 2 1/2 weeks or 5/6 lessons. The boys will have class in September and October and the girls will have class in May and June. In this unit the student will be able to recognize that working out in a pool is a great form of physical exercise. Through various activities, including swimming and the use of special equipment, the student will be exposed to water activities that enhance fitness.
High School Swim in Physical Education
The Aquatic Physical Education teachers teach these lessons. All students need bathing suits and towels. Grading consists of 50% participation, 25% skill work and 25% written work. Any missed classes due to absences, medicals or personal days (girls) should be made up. Teachers will inform you about make-ups. Unprepared or cuts may not be made up and points will be taken off. Medicals should be turned in prior to the first class, so alternate activities can be assigned.
9th Grade- All 9th graders swim for five weeks during Physical Education class. The classes are coed. You will be assigned a time to report to the pool for a unit in swimming. This unit consists of beginning, intermediate and advanced swimming skills, basic first aid, fitness activities and water games.
10th Grade- All 10th graders swim for five weeks during Physical Education class. The classes are coed. You will be assigned a time to report to the pool for a unit in swimming. The aquatic safety unit consists of more technical safety skills, stroke refinement, basic first aid, fitness activities and water games.

In all swim levels swimming is stressed as a lifetime sport or activity.
